JellyFish and Snapping Turtles at Hilton Head, SC

Hilton Head Island Beach

Beautiful summer weather seems to be slowly arriving! Yesterday afternoon, I was in Hilton Head Island, SC. It was absolutely amazing with it being in the high 70s. You couldn’t pass up a walk on the beach could ya?

As I began my walk, people were all over! There were numerous people already sun bathing, reading, enjoying the ocean waves and sounds, running, and walking their dogs. I was out there for about an hour. As I started walking back, I couldn’t help but notice all the jellyfish that were washed up on the beach lying there dead. Well, I don’t know if they were exactly dead but they looked like it. They weren’t moving at all, and I wasn’t about to go try to touch one!

I also took a short video, and uploaded it to the new Flickr Video! I couldn’t wait to give this new service a try! I think its an awesome new feature already added to a wonderful service!

I didn’t get the multiple ones that were laying in like groups of 3 or 4. As I continued walking, they were laying there one after another. There were people already swimming in the water. Now if I saw dead jellyfish all over the place, I wouldn’t be in that water. Would you?

Outside our hotel, we have a small pond with a few alligators and lots of snapping turtles. Unfortunately, I searched and searched for the alligator, but couldn’t find him. There was tons of of snapping turtles laying on the side of the pond sun bathing. I scared a couple of them as I walked up, and they jumped into the water.

Here is a short video of them too!

I can’t wait to go back to the beach when its 90! I am totally a HOT weather person! 70 degrees just gets too chilly!

Awwww! It was bad enough when you had HHI in your MSN message. Now I have to see this! I am counting the days until I go (40 days and counting). The flora and fauna of the Island has always excited me. Yep even the palmetto bugs (the nice term for ROACHES)! LOL

Do you ever go to Tybee Island (actually in GE but close to HHI)? They have a lot of turtles and you can see them lay eggs and hatch in the late summer. In early fall there are tons of Monarch butterflies that stop in. I have seen the most in Seas Pines (must pay to get in the gate if not property owner) and also at Coligny Plaza.

Thanks for giving me a little bit of my second home today!

    XXOO,

I just moved to Raleigh from Hilton Head Island six months ago! I used to be a reporter for the Island Packet. I miss that place SOOO much. And to answer your question about the jelly fish, generally speaking, you're right it's stupid to go swimming when you see so many wash ashore, but on warm days sometimes you have to take your chances. I lived there for two years without being stung. Then on one of my last weekends there, my friends and I went nightswimming and I totally got stung on the elbow. It hurt, for sure, but wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Next time you go to Hilton Head, you have to go to the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Also, try to go to the north end of the island and walk around the "heel" of the island near Calibougie Sound ... It's so beautiful. You can access it via Fish Haul Creek Park. If you go during low tide you'll find the best shells, and in the summer you'll almost always spot dolphins there! Oh your post made me miss it even more. As for the red wine, can't help you there. I do enjoy me some wine, but when it comes to sweet reds, I'm at a loss.

Hey , thanks for the pictures. I just got back to Chicago from a girls trip to Hilton Head and I was telling my children about the unbelievable amount of Jellyfish on the beach. It was crazy. I am glad I could show them this site instead of searching the web through the 2,000 species of jellyfish! I am an ocean girl and I always swim when I am near the ocean but not this time. It was only my second time to Hilton Head but it is so much better than Chicago, jellyfish or not ...I will for sure come back!!!!Thanks!! jan from chicago

I'm here in Hilton Head right now and there are tons of jellyfish washing up on shore by South Beach. We've been in the ocean all week but might limit ourselves to wading now that we've seen so many wash ashore further West!
